Megabytes to Kilobytes (MB to KB)

Type in either box: it converts both ways, accepts sums like 12*3, and shows every other file size unit too.

1 MB = 1,000 KB in decimal (SI) units, or 1,024 KB in binary units, the way Windows and RAM count. Use the Decimal / Binary switch below to pick.

How to convert megabytes to kilobytes

To convert megabytes (MB) to kilobytes (KB), multiply the value in megabytes by 1,000.

KB = MB × 1,000 (decimal)
KB = MB × 1,024 (binary)

Example: 5 MB = 5,000 KB, or 5,120 KB in binary.

Decimal (SI) counting steps by 1,000 and is what drive makers, macOS and phones use. Binary counting steps by 1,024 and is what Windows and RAM use; its unambiguous IEC names are KiB, MiB and GiB. Bits are decimal either way.

You can also type 5 MB to KB into the smart calculator, or mix units: 1 MB + 1 KB.

About the units

Megabyte (MB)

In decimal mode 1,000,000 bytes (1,000 KB); in binary mode 1,048,576 bytes (1,024 KB).

Kilobyte (KB)

In decimal (SI) mode 1,000 bytes; in binary mode 1,024 bytes, as Windows and RAM count. The unambiguous binary name is kibibyte (KiB).

Digital storage is counted in bits and bytes (1 byte = 8 bits). There are two ways to count bytes. Decimal (SI) prefixes step by 1,000: 1 KB = 1,000 B and 1 GB = 1,000 MB, which is how drive makers, macOS, iOS and Android report sizes. Binary prefixes step by 1,024: 1 KB = 1,024 B and 1 GB = 1,024 MB, which is how Windows and RAM count (the IEC names for these are KiB, MiB and GiB). Bits are always decimal: 1 Kb = 1,000 b.

Questions and answers

How many kilobytes are in a megabyte?

One megabyte (MB) equals 1,000 kilobytes in decimal (SI) counting, or 1,024 kilobytes in binary counting (1 KB = 1,024 B), which Windows uses.

How do I convert megabytes to kilobytes?

To convert megabytes to kilobytes, multiply the value in megabytes by 1,000. The formula is KB = MB × 1,000. For example, 5 MB = 5,000 KB.

What is 5 MB in KB?

5 megabytes is 5,000 kilobytes.

Which is bigger, a megabyte or a kilobyte?

A megabyte is bigger: 1 MB = 1,000 KB.

Is 1 GB equal to 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

Both are in use. In decimal (SI) counting, which drive makers, macOS, iOS and Android use, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary counting, which Windows and RAM use, 1 GB = 1,024 MB; the unambiguous IEC name for that size is the gibibyte (GiB). ConvertEasy has a Decimal / Binary switch so KB, MB, GB and TB follow whichever you need, while KiB, MiB and GiB are always binary.

Are kilobits 1,000 or 1,024 bits?

ConvertEasy treats bits as decimal in both modes: 1 Kb = 1,000 b, 1 Mb = 1,000 Kb. A byte is always 8 bits, so only byte units (KB, MB, GB…) change with the switch.

Does this MB to KB converter work offline?

Yes. ConvertEasy is a progressive web app: after your first visit it keeps working with no connection, and you can install it to your home screen from the browser menu.
