Terabytes to Gigabytes (TB to GB)

Type in either box: it converts both ways, accepts sums like 12*3, and shows every other file size unit too.

1 TB = 1,000 GB in decimal (SI) units, or 1,024 GB in binary units, the way Windows and RAM count. Use the Decimal / Binary switch below to pick.

How to convert terabytes to gigabytes

To convert terabytes (TB) to gigabytes (GB), multiply the value in terabytes by 1,000.

GB = TB × 1,000 (decimal)
GB = TB × 1,024 (binary)

Example: 5 TB = 5,000 GB, or 5,120 GB in binary.

Decimal (SI) counting steps by 1,000 and is what drive makers, macOS and phones use. Binary counting steps by 1,024 and is what Windows and RAM use; its unambiguous IEC names are KiB, MiB and GiB. Bits are decimal either way.

You can also type 5 TB to GB into the smart calculator, or mix units: 1 TB + 1 GB.

About the units

Terabyte (TB)

In decimal mode 1,000 GB, which is how drives are sold; in binary mode 1,024 GB.

Gigabyte (GB)

In decimal mode 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 MB); in binary mode 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024 MB).

Digital storage is counted in bits and bytes (1 byte = 8 bits). There are two ways to count bytes. Decimal (SI) prefixes step by 1,000: 1 KB = 1,000 B and 1 GB = 1,000 MB, which is how drive makers, macOS, iOS and Android report sizes. Binary prefixes step by 1,024: 1 KB = 1,024 B and 1 GB = 1,024 MB, which is how Windows and RAM count (the IEC names for these are KiB, MiB and GiB). Bits are always decimal: 1 Kb = 1,000 b.

Questions and answers

How many gigabytes are in a terabyte?

One terabyte (TB) equals 1,000 gigabytes in decimal (SI) counting, or 1,024 gigabytes in binary counting (1 KB = 1,024 B), which Windows uses.

How do I convert terabytes to gigabytes?

To convert terabytes to gigabytes, multiply the value in terabytes by 1,000. The formula is GB = TB × 1,000. For example, 5 TB = 5,000 GB.

What is 5 TB in GB?

5 terabytes is 5,000 gigabytes.

Which is bigger, a terabyte or a gigabyte?

A terabyte is bigger: 1 TB = 1,000 GB.

Is 1 GB equal to 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

Both are in use. In decimal (SI) counting, which drive makers, macOS, iOS and Android use, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. In binary counting, which Windows and RAM use, 1 GB = 1,024 MB; the unambiguous IEC name for that size is the gibibyte (GiB). ConvertEasy has a Decimal / Binary switch so KB, MB, GB and TB follow whichever you need, while KiB, MiB and GiB are always binary.

Are kilobits 1,000 or 1,024 bits?

ConvertEasy treats bits as decimal in both modes: 1 Kb = 1,000 b, 1 Mb = 1,000 Kb. A byte is always 8 bits, so only byte units (KB, MB, GB…) change with the switch.

Does this TB to GB converter work offline?

Yes. ConvertEasy is a progressive web app: after your first visit it keeps working with no connection, and you can install it to your home screen from the browser menu.
