Data transfer rate converter

Gigabytes per Second to Gigabits per Second (GB/s to Gbps)

Type in either box: it converts both ways, accepts sums like 12*3, and shows every other bandwidth unit too.

1 GB/s = 8 Gbps in decimal (SI) units, or 8.589934592 Gbps in binary units, the way Windows and RAM count. Use the Decimal / Binary switch below to pick.

How to convert gigabytes per second to gigabits per second

To convert gigabytes per second (GB/s) to gigabits per second (Gbps), multiply the value in gigabytes per second by 8.

Gbps = GB/s × 8 (decimal)
Gbps = GB/s × 8.589934592 (binary)

Example: 5 GB/s = 40 Gbps, or 42.94967296 Gbps in binary.

Decimal (SI) counting steps by 1,000 and is what drive makers, macOS and phones use. Binary counting steps by 1,024 and is what Windows and RAM use; its unambiguous IEC names are KiB, MiB and GiB. Bits are decimal either way.

You can also type 5 GB/s to Gbps into the smart calculator, or mix units: 1 GB/s + 1 Gbps.

About the units

Gigabyte per second (GB/s)

A unit of bandwidth.

Gigabit per second (Gbps)

A unit of bandwidth.

Network speeds are sold in bits per second, which are always decimal (1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps). Download dialogs show bytes per second, which some apps count in decimal (1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s) and others in binary (1 MB/s = 1,024 KB/s). Because a byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s (11.9 binary MB/s) before protocol overhead.

Questions and answers

How many gigabits per second are in a gigabyte per second?

One gigabyte per second (GB/s) equals 8 gigabits per second in decimal (SI) counting, or 8.589934592 gigabits per second in binary counting (1 KB = 1,024 B), which Windows uses.

How do I convert gigabytes per second to gigabits per second?

To convert gigabytes per second to gigabits per second, multiply the value in gigabytes per second by 8. The formula is Gbps = GB/s × 8. For example, 5 GB/s = 40 Gbps.

What is 5 GB/s in Gbps?

5 gigabytes per second is 40 gigabits per second.

Which is bigger, a gigabyte per second or a gigabit per second?

A gigabyte per second is bigger: 1 GB/s = 8 Gbps.

Why is my download speed lower than my internet plan?

Plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps) and downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps is at most 12.5 MB/s, or 11.92 MB/s if your download manager counts in binary, and protocol overhead takes a little more.

Is 1 MB/s 1,000 KB/s or 1,024 KB/s?

It depends on the app. Decimal counting gives 1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s; binary counting (common in Windows tools and some download managers) gives 1,024 KB/s. Use the Decimal / Binary switch to match your app. Bit rates like Mbps are always decimal.

Does this GB/s to Gbps converter work offline?

Yes. ConvertEasy is a progressive web app: after your first visit it keeps working with no connection, and you can install it to your home screen from the browser menu.
