Megabits per Second to Kilobits per Second (Mbps to kbps)

Type in either box: it converts both ways, accepts sums like 12*3, and shows every other bandwidth unit too.

1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps. To convert megabits per second to kilobits per second, multiply the value in megabits per second by 1,000.

How to convert megabits per second to kilobits per second

To convert megabits per second (Mbps) to kilobits per second (kbps), multiply the value in megabits per second by 1,000.

kbps = Mbps × 1,000

Example: 5 Mbps = 5,000 kbps.

You can also type 5 Mbps to kbps into the smart calculator, or mix units: 1 Mbps + 1 kbps.

About the units

Megabit per second (Mbps)

One million bits per second, the usual unit for broadband and Wi-Fi speeds.

Kilobit per second (kbps)

A unit of bandwidth.

Network speeds are sold in bits per second, which are always decimal (1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps). Download dialogs show bytes per second, which some apps count in decimal (1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s) and others in binary (1 MB/s = 1,024 KB/s). Because a byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s (11.9 binary MB/s) before protocol overhead.

Questions and answers

How many kilobits per second are in a megabit per second?

One megabit per second (Mbps) equals 1,000 kilobits per second (kbps).

How do I convert megabits per second to kilobits per second?

To convert megabits per second to kilobits per second, multiply the value in megabits per second by 1,000. The formula is kbps = Mbps × 1,000. For example, 5 Mbps = 5,000 kbps.

What is 5 Mbps in kbps?

5 megabits per second is 5,000 kilobits per second.

Which is bigger, a megabit per second or a kilobit per second?

A megabit per second is bigger: 1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps.

Why is my download speed lower than my internet plan?

Plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps) and downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps is at most 12.5 MB/s, or 11.92 MB/s if your download manager counts in binary, and protocol overhead takes a little more.

Is 1 MB/s 1,000 KB/s or 1,024 KB/s?

It depends on the app. Decimal counting gives 1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s; binary counting (common in Windows tools and some download managers) gives 1,024 KB/s. Use the Decimal / Binary switch to match your app. Bit rates like Mbps are always decimal.
