Megabytes per Second to Megabits per Second (MB/s to Mbps)

Type in either box: it converts both ways, accepts sums like 12*3, and shows every other bandwidth unit too.

1 MB/s = 8 Mbps in decimal (SI) units, or 8.388608 Mbps in binary units, the way Windows and RAM count. Use the Decimal / Binary switch below to pick.

How to convert megabytes per second to megabits per second

To convert megabytes per second (MB/s) to megabits per second (Mbps), multiply the value in megabytes per second by 8.

Mbps = MB/s × 8 (decimal)
Mbps = MB/s × 8.388608 (binary)

Example: 5 MB/s = 40 Mbps, or 41.94304 Mbps in binary.

Decimal (SI) counting steps by 1,000 and is what drive makers, macOS and phones use. Binary counting steps by 1,024 and is what Windows and RAM use; its unambiguous IEC names are KiB, MiB and GiB. Bits are decimal either way.

You can also type 5 MB/s to Mbps into the smart calculator, or mix units: 1 MB/s + 1 Mbps.

About the units

Megabyte per second (MB/s)

One million bytes per second, how browsers and download managers show speed.

Megabit per second (Mbps)

One million bits per second, the usual unit for broadband and Wi-Fi speeds.

Network speeds are sold in bits per second, which are always decimal (1 Mbps = 1,000 kbps). Download dialogs show bytes per second, which some apps count in decimal (1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s) and others in binary (1 MB/s = 1,024 KB/s). Because a byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection tops out around 12.5 MB/s (11.9 binary MB/s) before protocol overhead.

Questions and answers

How many megabits per second are in a megabyte per second?

One megabyte per second (MB/s) equals 8 megabits per second in decimal (SI) counting, or 8.388608 megabits per second in binary counting (1 KB = 1,024 B), which Windows uses.

How do I convert megabytes per second to megabits per second?

To convert megabytes per second to megabits per second, multiply the value in megabytes per second by 8. The formula is Mbps = MB/s × 8. For example, 5 MB/s = 40 Mbps.

What is 5 MB/s in Mbps?

5 megabytes per second is 40 megabits per second.

Which is bigger, a megabyte per second or a megabit per second?

A megabyte per second is bigger: 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps.

Why is my download speed lower than my internet plan?

Plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps) and downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps is at most 12.5 MB/s, or 11.92 MB/s if your download manager counts in binary, and protocol overhead takes a little more.

Is 1 MB/s 1,000 KB/s or 1,024 KB/s?

It depends on the app. Decimal counting gives 1 MB/s = 1,000 KB/s; binary counting (common in Windows tools and some download managers) gives 1,024 KB/s. Use the Decimal / Binary switch to match your app. Bit rates like Mbps are always decimal.

Does this MB/s to Mbps converter work offline?

Yes. ConvertEasy is a progressive web app: after your first visit it keeps working with no connection, and you can install it to your home screen from the browser menu.
